Im thinking of learning to play electric guitar, but is it important that i need to learn acoustic first?

I have an acoustic guitar, and really want to learn how to play it. Does anybody know of any good beginners guides on the net which will help me get the guitar and tune and help me to teach myself?

I’ve recently just started learning classical guitar. The music school told me that beginners must start with classical guitar. I was feeling a lot uneasy playing a classical guitar, and I wanted to change course by enrolling to an acoustic one. I was quite upset, because I dislike classical guitars… I don’t really enjoy classical songs! All I listen to is either pop or rock songs, so that’s why I prefer acoustic guitar to classical guitar.

A friend told me that if you are going to learn to play guitar, it is better to learn acoustic before you play electric. I’m wondeirng a couple things. First, is this true? If so, why? And second, if it is true, why can’t it be done the other way around?
